Quest'arte sviluppatasi alla fine del 1800 ma che in realtà ha radici molto più profonde; infatti già nell'antichità, grazie a delle cannucce, si usava spruzzare il colore sugli oggetti.
L'aerografia sostanzialmente è una tecnica di pittura classificata nel settore delle arti "non convenzionali", cioè quelle tecniche poco ortodosse che si distaccano dal filone delle arti classiche quali scultura, pittura ecc. grazie all'impiego di materiali e tecniche d'esecuzione diversi dal "normale".
Un'aerografia viene, appunto, eseguita con l'aerografo strumento abbastanza moderno rispetto ad altri molto più vecchi mezzi di pittura.
Questo strumento delle dimensioni non superiori ad una penna, nebulizza il colore liquido presente in un serbatoio mischiandolo all'aria proveniente da un compressore, quindi ci permette di spuzzare del colore, e non può essere utilizzato senza una fonte che produca un getto d'aria continua.
Questa tecnica permette di stendere in maniera omogenea il colore sulla superfice e di realizzare sfumature in maniera impeccabile con ottima precisione.
Nell'esecuzione di un'illustrazione, all'aerografo si possono affiancare altri strumenti, quali pennellini di varie misure per piccoli segni o ritocchi, mascherine per ottenere dei contorni netti di una figura, o pastelli, matite pennini, gomme e altri attrezzi o trucchetti per produrre particolari effetti, da questo punto di vista non c'è limite a quello che si può utilizzare.
Questo non vuol dire che non si possa fare una buona aerografia solo ed esclusivamente utilizzando l'aerografo, questo però significa impegnarsi molto di più e spendere molto più tempo del normale.
In passato, prima della presa di potere dei computer nel campo della grafica, le illustrazioni per campagne pubblicitarie, locandine, manifesti e altro, erano compito degli aerografisti che creavano il prototipo il quale veniva riprodotto e stampato in alte tirature per i suddetti utilizzi.
Oggi con l'avvento dei più svariati programmi per la grafica, l'aerografia ha perduto un po di terreno.
Tuttavia non si possono paragonare i progetti digitali con una buona aerografia, rimarrà sempre un mezzo espressivo come pochi e degno di avere una parte (ancora non conquistata) tra le altre più importanti e famose tecniche artistiche.

L'aerografia, oltre alle normali illustrazioni, ha un campo di applicazione vastissimo, infatti si possono decorare automezzi, moto, scooter, caschi, altri oggetti tra i più svariati e gran parte di tutte le superfici conosciute, chiaramente con delle particolari attenzioni per ognuna di esse.
