If you're an artist, you're not an artist because of technological changes or cultural changes. You're not an artist because the success you want to aim for, or the benefits that you get from it. You're an artist because you can't be anything else. It's so obviously true to me. I am not an artist because I chose to be an artist. There's many things I can do in my life which would pay the bills easier. I am an artist because there is a sensitivity and a fragility, a feeling that I'm on the brink of the abyss all the time. I need to use an outlet. I need to use a craft, an art form in order to stabilize myself, in order to explain this chaos to myself. And everything else is just ripple effects. So as long as you do that, nothing really matters.
