Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a social movement that originated in the United States and has since become a global phenomenon. The movement aims to combat systemic racism, police brutality, and social injustice faced by Black people and other marginalized communities.
The phrase "Black Lives Matter" was first used in 2013, following the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who had shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teenager. The movement gained momentum in 2014, after the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City, both of whom were Black men killed by police officers.
BLM seeks to address issues such as:- Racial profiling and police brutality- Mass incarceration and sentencing disparities- Economic inequality and lack of access to education and job opportunities- Voter suppression and disenfranchisement- Cultural erasure and marginalization
The movement has sparked protests, marches, and advocacy efforts across the United States and around the world, calling for policy reforms and greater accountability from institutions and individuals.
BLM has also inspired a broader conversation about systemic racism, privilege, and allyship, encouraging people to examine their own biases and work towards creating a more equitable society.
