art digital, 2026

This watercolor and ink illustration provides a detailed front and rear view of a musician from the British Army's 4th Regiment of Foot (also known as the King's Own Royal Regiment) during the American Revolutionary War in 1778.
?Front View: The musician on the right is shown holding a brass horn (a natural horn or trumpet). He wears a distinctive bright red wool coat featuring elaborate blue facings on the lapels and cuffs, heavily decorated with white lace trim. He wears a white waistcoat underneath, paired with white breeches, high dark gaiters (or leggings) buttoned up to the knee, and a tricorn hat with a cockade.
?Rear View: The figure on the left illustrates the back configuration of the uniform, highlighting the white crossbelts, the intricate white lace pattern on the back seams and sleeves, and the fringed shoulder wings characteristic of military musicians. A small sword or hanger hangs at his hip, and he carries a fife or instrument case tucked under his arm.
?About the Artist: Charles M. Lefferts
?Biography:
?Charles MacKubin Lefferts was an American illustrator, military historian, and soldier, widely recognized for his highly detailed and historically accurate representations of military uniforms from the American Revolutionary War.?Born in New York City, Lefferts was largely a self-taught artist. He served periodically in the New York National Guard starting in 1893 and later enlisted in the federal army during World War I in 1917, eventually retiring in 1921 with the rank of Lieutenant.
?Outside of his military service, he dedicated his life to researching the exact details, colors, and cuts of the uniforms worn by the American, British, French, and German forces during the Revolution. In 1909, his expertise earned him a membership in the New York Historical Society. His lifelong research was posthumously compiled and published by the society in 1926 in the landmark book, Uniforms of the Armies in the War of the American Revolution, 1775–1783.
