Artist Biography:
Cecil Constant Philip Lawson (1880–1967) was an English military painter, illustrator, and writer. Born in Kensington, London, he was the son of the noted landscape painter Cecil Gordon Lawson. Educated at Charterhouse, Lawson spent many of his early years in Paris, where he immersed himself in artistic circles and developed a distinct style focusing on military subjects. He served as a soldier during the First World War, enlisting as a private in the Westminster Dragoons and seeing action in Gallipoli, Egypt, and Palestine (including the capture of Jerusalem), before later serving on the Western Front with the Machine Gun Corps. Although never an official war artist, he painted numerous historical and battlefield scenes. Between the world wars, Lawson gained renown as a pioneer of military uniform research, authoring and illustrating the multi-volume History of the Uniforms of the British Army. His meticulous archival sketches and watercolor plates remain foundational resources for historians and military institutions today.
