art digital, 2026
Jean-Baptiste Auguste Vinchon (Paris, August 5, 1789 – Ems, January 16, 1855) was a prominent French painter and engraver, best known for his historical and academic paintings as well as his portraits, created in the tradition of Neoclassicism and early Romanticism.
Training and Rise to Prominence
Academic Training: He was a pupil of Gioacchino Serangeli and subsequently studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Prix de Rome (1814): In 1814, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome for history painting with the work *Diogenes and Alexander*; this honor allowed him to reside at the Villa Medici in Rome to refine his study of classical antiquity and the Italian Renaissance.
Artistic Output and Official Commissions
Vinchon became a key artist for French institutions and the monarchy during the Bourbon Restoration and the July Monarchy:
History Painting and Military Subjects: He created large-scale celebratory canvases and depictions of historical and military events under royal commission—works destined, among other locations, for the Gallery of Battles at the Palace of Versailles.
Religious and Public Decorations: He painted frescoes for several chapels in Paris (including the Church of Saint-Sulpice and the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés) and executed decorative cycles for the Paris Stock Exchange (Palais Brongniart).
Portraiture: He was an acclaimed portraitist, capable of combining Neoclassical formal rigor with the psychological sensitivity characteristic of 19th-century painting.
