This historical illustration depicts an officer of the 11th Line Infantry Regiment (Regimiento 11 de Infantería de Línea), also known as the Regimiento General Las Heras, which was a prominent corps within the Army of the Andes led by General José de San Martín during the South American Wars of Independence.Character & Uniform Overview* The Uniform: The distinctive dark green coatee with red facings (collars and cuffs), gold buttons, epaulettes, buff-colored trousers, tall black cavalry/infantry boots, and a crimson waist sash reflects the military style utilized during the campaigns to liberate Chile and Peru in the 1810s. The officer is holding a shako adorned with a plume and a sabre hangs at his side.* The Unit: Formed under the direction of then-Colonel José de San Martín and proposed by its commander, Lieutenant Colonel Juan Gregorio de Las Heras, this infantry regiment was foundational to the Patriot forces.Biography of Juan Gregorio de Las Heras* Early Life & Career: Juan Gregorio de Las Heras (1780–1866) was an Argentine military officer and statesman born in Buenos Aires. Before playing a crucial role in the independence wars, he participated in the defense of Buenos Aires during the British Invasions of the Río de la Plata (1806–1807).* The Chilean Campaign: In 1812, Las Heras led auxiliary troops sent to assist the fledgling patriot government in Chile, where his regiment saw early combat actions such as the Battle of Cucha Cucha (1814). Following setbacks against Royalist forces, he played an instrumental role in rallying and reorganizing troops.* The Crossing of the Andes: As a trusted commander under General José de San Martín, Las Heras commanded a key division during the legendary 1817 Crossing of the Andes, contributing decisively to major victories like the Battle of Chacabuco and the Battle of Maipú, which secured Chilean independence.* Later Campaigns and Presidency: He subsequently took part in the maritime campaign to liberate Peru, helping capture Lima and the fortress of Callao. Later in life, he served as the Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires from 1824 to 1826, before eventually passing away in Santiago, Chile, in 1866.
