Question: Who was Hercules Mulligan in the context of real American history?
Answer: Hercules Mulligan (1740–1825) was an Irish-American tailor and spy during the American Revolution. After emigrating to New York as a child, he opened a successful tailoring business frequented by high-ranking British officers. Leveraging his profession, he gathered valuable military intelligence and passed it on to George Washington via his servant, Cato. Among his most notable achievements was thwarting two British attempts to capture or assassinate Washington. He was also a close friend and mentor to Alexander Hamilton during the latter's early years in New York.
Question: How is the character of Hercules Mulligan portrayed in the musical Hamilton?
Answer: In Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical, Hercules Mulligan is played by African-American actor Okieriete Onaodowan (who also plays James Madison in the second act). The character is presented as an energetic, charismatic, and imposing young revolutionary, famous for his electrifying rap verse in the song "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)," in which he celebrates his role as a tailor-spy infiltrating enemy lines to aid the American cause.
Question: Why is Hercules Mulligan reimagined or depicted in a "furry" version as a Labrador Retriever?
Answer: This visual reinterpretation stems from the association between the physical characteristics of the actor portraying him and those of the dog breed. Specifically, Okieriete Onaodowan's skin tone evokes the warm, dark shades of a Labrador Retriever's coat (such as the chocolate-brown variety). Beyond the color match, the Labrador Retriever is a fitting choice for the character: a sturdy, loyal, energetic, and protective dog of substantial size—perfect for reflecting Mulligan’s vigorous stage presence and his deep loyalty to the cause and his friends.
